WHEN YOU JUST CAN'T MONDAY...
I don't know about you, but my Monday blues kick in around 8pm on Sunday evening. Sunday never seems long enough, I always want more time on the couch, more time to myself, and really just an extra day between Sunday and Monday -- wouldn't that be awesome!
Here are some tips to help you fight those Monday blues:
Morning wake-up shot! -- I prepare this Sunday night so I don't have an extra 'chore' to do Monday morning, when I am already struggling to start my week. I have no real science on how I make this, I sort of improvise:
freshly squeezed orange & lemon juice
fresh ginger
turmeric
apple cider vinegar
cayenne pepper
honey or blue agave
I make enough for the week, so I can just pour a shot glass worth each day, blend it and store it in the refrigerator. The cayenne pepper is what gives this shot a 'kick', and it is a perfect way to wake up! You can totally play around with proportions - find what's right for you! You can also make different variations of this, modify or substitute fruits and spices to fit your palate.
I plan to experiment with cinnamon next - for something a bit simpler I may just add cinnamon to a blend of lemon juice and honey.
Blast an up-beat song! -- My Monday morning suggestion is Fitz & The Tantrums "The Walker." It's a fun song, and a quick way to get yourself moving around a little bit. If you have close-by neighbors, be mindful on how loud you blast, of course!
(1 Minute) Meditation -- This can be ANYTHING! Just take a minute before leaving the house, focus on your breathing, place your feet on the ground and really feel them planted there. Mindful stretching, or a 1 minute body scan can help you relax. Even for just a minute, relaxing with intention is always a good idea!
You can do a quick meditation practice anywhere, any time of the day, and I find it really relaxes me. Another good time to do a quick "check in" is when you first to get to work. Often I notice I'm a bit wound up when I sit down, I still have traveling energy and I don't feel quite settled. Taking 3 deep breaths really is calming.
A POP of color! -- Something a little different than the tips above, but a little boost to your phsyical self esteem never hurt anyone. I always find that picking out Monday morning's work clothes is the toughest. So, I typically go with something plain, simple but classic - all black! You can't go wrong with all black... but where I add the fun and touch of color is in my makeup. I'm not much of a makeup person, but I played around with bright eyeliners recently and really like the results. A clean face (maybe a little bronzer ;)) and a bright blue or purple eyeliner ( I only add it on my bottom lid, but to each his own!) is an easy way to take an all black outfit to the next level.
If you're not ready for a bright, bold color on your face, try adding a chunky, colorful necklace or earrings to your outfit.
How do you start your Monday morning?!!
